court gives Kenya doctors five days to end 51 days old strike.




 Kenyan court   gave doctors and nurses five days to end a crippling nationwide strike, reneging on an earlier threat to jail union officials this happened on Thursday.

The strike that started on December 5 has left public hospitals close and for more than seven weeks patients are unable to get basic medical Care's.


The judge at kenya Hellen Wasilwa, Employment and Labour Relations Court, on January 12 she gave seven union officials one-month suspended sentences and also ordered them to end the strike within two weeks.

But as that last demand and warning passed on Thursday she gave the officials another five-day to be free from the punishment.

“she further said, I hereby suspend the sentence further for five days and this is not for negotiation but for calling off the strike.


The officials are owed back in court on January 31.


The Doctors have rejected a government offer of 40 percent rise saying that it was knock down the short of promises made in a 2013 agreement and failed to address other issues such as lack of Equipment and staff shortages .

Kenyan university lecturers also went on strike a week ago over none payment.

The general, disruptive industrial action comes months before an August general election.
